This is an example of one of the weave patterns that can be used on porch chairs...my personal favorite...the herringbone pattern.   Not so long ago, porch chairs were made in the USA and constructed to last a lifetime.  The seat pictured above was done with a flat-oval reed in 1/4 inch width.  The reeds come in various width sizes, and are either flat, or have a slightly rounded top-side...called "flat-oval".  The seat pictured below is the same pattern using a wide binder cane material, approximately 6-7mm wide.  Replacement seats done in the herringbone pattern are:
